Sonny Dykes fired as football coach at California

News of Sonny Dykes' firing by Cal's football program came as a surprise to many when it emerged Sunday morning. The Golden Bears encountered a disappointing season in 2016-2017 while finishing with an underwhelming 5-7 record en route to missing out on reaching a bowl game. He finished with a 19-30 record.

In that same story, Feldman reported that multiple college teams would fire their head coaches if they thought they could get Kelly.

Before coaching at Cal, Dykes was head coach at Louisiana Tech, where he led the Bulldogs to a 22-15 record over his three seasons. The Bears went 8-5 in 2015 with future No. 1 NFL Draft pick Jared Goff at quarterback.

Dykes and the administration seemed to be at odds after that 2015 season during a prolonged negotiation of a contract extension. For that alone, he deserves credit and our thanks. That's not exactly the progress Cal expected moving on from Jeff Tedford. "But after looking at a number of factors after the end of this season, I felt that we needed a change of direction for the good of our student-athletes and our program".

Offensive coordinator Jake Spavital will serve as interim coach. Also that year, Cal quarterback Jared Goff was the No. 1 pick in the National Football League draft by the Rams.
