Palaniswami stakes claim to form Tamil Nadu govt — AIADMK crisis

Palaniswami stakes claim to form Tamil Nadu govt — AIADMK crisis

Just nine days ago, Sasikala herself had been elected to the post to pave her way to becoming the chief minister.

The pronouncement of the verdict was completed in about eight minutes. With his characteristic disarming smile, Justice Ghose said, "You can see it is a fatty judgment".

AIADMK MP and the Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha Thambidurai has said that the party will go for an appeal against the verdict convicting Sasikala and the other two accused. With the SC directing the accused to surrender before the trail court, Karnataka's Chief Justice, Advocate General and Registrar General are in a huddle, looking to fill the vacancy in the special court.

Sasikala, a former video parlour who wielded vast clout due to her close ties with Jayalalithaa, was made the AIADMK general secretary on December 29.

The pending disproportionate assets case dates back to 1996.

There was no immediate reaction from Sasikala, who was not present at the apex court in New Delhi and has been holed up in a resort close to Chennai since last week. With Jayalalithaa and Sasikala no more, the party will suffer without a leader who can command the cadre, political analysts said. They were "accommodated" there, not on humanitarian concern, but pursuant to the conspiracy hatched by them.

But some legislators claimed they were being held hostage, and said they were backing Mr Panneerselvam. She also spent the night at the Kyuvathur resort where the MLAS were lodged in a bid to formalise the party's strategies. She was talking to the party cadres giving an emotional appeal. The AIADMK has about 125 -just eight more than the number it needs to win the vote.

As Chinnamma is now ineligible to contest the elections and form a government after the judgement, Palanisamy has been elected as the new legislative party leader of the party. According to India Today, a van will ferry out all those MLAs who have made a decision to join Panneerselvam from the Golden Bay resort.

Sasikala, a former video cassette saleswoman who initially impressed Jayalalithaa by making a campaign video, emerged from the background as a low-profile adviser to mount a successful bid within AIADMK to take over from interim leader O Panneerselvam.

They feel though Mr Panneerselvam would be acceptable to majority of the AIADMK MLAs, it would still be hard for him to get the backing of 118 MLAs, the magic number that is needed to install a government in Tamil Nadu.
