Takiya Holmes, 11, Dies Three Days After Shooting

At this time of uncertainty, we want to support her family in as many ways as we can. Just weeks before she was shot, her cousin Rachel Williams said she had expressed concerns about Chicago's violence after someone in their neighborhood was killed in a shooting.

Both girls are in a critical condition in hospital, and family members say they are each fighting for their lives.

Prayers go out to the memory of Takiya Holmes and her family, and also to Kanari Gentry-Bowers and her family.

According to police, she was hit in the back of the head during the incident on the city's South Side, which saw another head shooting less than half an hour earlier.

Kanari Gentry-Bowers, 12, was playing with friends near her school playground when shots rang out.

"She's in dark water right now", an uncle said. She hadn't. A few minutes later the family received another call informing them the girl had been shot. She was shot in the neck and the bullet severed her spinal cord.

She had not showed any signs of brain activity since she was taken to the hospital on Saturday. Kanari was rushed to Stroger Hospital.

Lopez planned to go door-to-door in the area of the shooting Monday evening in hopes of gathering information, as police continue to investigate, canvassing the area and searching for any surveillance video. Nine children younger than 15 years old have been shot in Chicago so far this year, the Tribune said.

"We are not doing too good", Takiya's cousin, anti-violence activist Andrew Holmes, said Tuesday. She succumbed to her injuries Tuesday morning.
