South Carolinians named James Beard Award semifinalists

South Carolinians named James Beard Award semifinalists

They are Brian Hill of Francine in Camden, who has now made the list eight times; Andrew Taylor and Mike Wiley of Eventide Oyster, who are semifinalists for a third time; Ravin Nakjaroen of Long Grain in Camden, who made the list twice before; and Keiko Suzuki of Suzuki's Sushi Bar in Rockland, who was also nominated past year. This is Smedstad's first Beard nomination.

It's when the annual James Beard Awards announce semifinalists, calling attention to the country's best chefs, food writers and educators. "They are advocates. We are holding up our end of the deal and we are excited that the experience is as great as what we have to serve".

Much to our surprise, nobody nominated White Castle in the category of Best Restaurant Trend for becoming quite fancy on Valentine's Day.

Andrea Reusing of Lantern in Chapel Hill and Raleigh's Ashley Christensen (Poole's, Death and Taxes, Beasley's, Chucks) are semi-finalists for outstanding chef in the country.

James Beard Awards are like the Oscars of the culinary world. Former Madison chef Justin Carlisle of Ardent in Milwaukee, was nominated in the same category, as was Luke Zahm of Driftless Café in Viroqua. Semi-finalists in 21 categories were selected from more than 24,000 online entries.

The James Beard Foundation plans to announce the five finalists for each category March 15, and award winners will be unveiled at the James Beard Foundation Awards Gala in Chicago May 1.

Winners of the 2017 James Beard Media Awards will be announced April 25.

Des Moines restaurateur Jason Simon earned a "Best Chef: Midwest" nomination in 2011.

Irish Channel sandwich star Turkey & The Wolf is the only New Orleans restaurant named a semifinalist for the foundation's coveted Best New Restaurant award, a big feat for the casual newcomer led by Mason Hereford and Lauren Holton, whose whimsical sandwich creations have garnered widespread accolades from critics (including this one).
