CPAC organizer: Alt-right are 'garden-variety left-wing fascists'

The event concludes Saturday with the annual CPAC straw poll, an early indicator of which potential presidential prospects are among the most popular with conservatives.

"I was expelled from CPAC".

In 1985, President Ronald Reagan explained why he was attending the 11th-ever Conservative Political Action Conference: "CPAC is the opportunity to dance with the one who brung ya".

Conservatives who travel to the Gaylord Hotel in Maryland's National Harbor will be greeted by a generous lineup of President Trump's closest advisers, including White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, senior strategist Steve Bannon and counselor Kellyanne Conway. More and more cameras and recorders were shoved toward Spencer as he reminded reporters that the self-appointed guardians of conservatism had trusted Trump long after the alt-right had. "'Race-baiting ideas. Anti-Muslim and anti-Immigrant ideas -- all key tenets making up an emerging racist ideology known as the 'Alt-Right.'.The de facto merger between Breitbart and the Trump Campaign represents a landmark achievement for the 'Alt-Right.' A fringe element has effectively taken over the Republican Party". After a year-old video of Yiannopoulos appearing to advocate sexual relationships between young teenage boys and older men, CPAC's leadership hastily withdrew his invitation, followed by Simon & Schuster canceling a book deal.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was among the first speakers at the event.

Vice President Mike Pence will also give a major address at 7:30 pm. Republican Senator Ted Cruz won last year's poll by a wide margin, with Trump finishing third, behind Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

Schlapp credited Trump with naming the most conservative Cabinet in a half-century and nominating a Supreme Court justice, Neil Gorsuch, who has conservatives' blessings.

He also called upon fiscal conservatives on Capitol Hill to immediately cut taxes and simplify the tax code "because Congress won't touch taxes next year, in an election cycle".

Matt Schlapp-chairman of the American Conservative Union, which funds the gathering-told The Daily Beast his group welcomes Facebook's participation.

Even so, some conservatives, including some at CPAC, are nervously watching Trump.

"Fellow conservatives, this is our time", he said. Breitbart reporters or editors are moderating at least eight events.

Ron Nervitt, a retired federal employee from Williamsburg, VA said, "I'm not a Trump supporter but I think what the Republicans are doing in trying to scuttle him is bad".

Trump referred last week to a wide swathe of the mainstream press as the "enemy of the people", taking a page from Chinese dictator Mao Zedong, and his campaign and administration have unabashedly labeled any negative coverage as "fake news". It's much harder to imagine how they could do the same this time around.
