Documents: After shooting, Roof went toward 2nd black church

After killing nine black parishioners at a Charleston church, Dylann Roof drove more than 20 miles and stopped at a second African-American church, according to newly unsealed court documents.

The evidence shows Roof exited the interstate and drove toward Branch AME church in Summerville after the massacre at Emanuel AME.

Prosecutors said Roof, now 22, shut off his Global Positioning System device, something they say indicates he stopped the vehicle. Like Emanuel, the Branch church was holding its weekly Bible study that night.

They noted similarities between Emanuel AME and Branch AME, as both churches have predominantly black congregations and held Bible studies on Wednesday nights.

He said he was shocked to learn through news reports that his church had been Roof's target as well.

The Bible study at Branch AME had been canceled that night, the church's Rev. Rufus Berry told the Post and Courier newspaper. "I dread to even think about that", he said while thanking God that the church was protected from a second attack.

"I would hate to know what the outcome would be".

Prosecutors argue that this shows Roof was contemplating another attack, but defense attorneys have said there is no evidence of this.

State prosecutors have pursued the death penalty against Roof for murder charges, but that trial was indefinitely postponed during his federal proceedings.

Roof, 22, was sentenced to death last month in a federal trial for the 2015 massacre in Charleston, South Carolina.

During trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing Roof had lists of other black churches in his auto when he was arrested in Shelby, North Carolina. However, Branch AME was not among the churches listed on the papers found in his vehicle.

In his Federal Bureau of Investigation interview after his arrest, Roof told police he was too exhausted after his Emanuel massacre to keep shooting. No trial date has been set.
