Microsoft Unveils $10 Monthly Gaming Subscription Service For Xbox One

Microsoft is promising over 100 Xbox One and backwards compatible Xbox 360 games, and subscribers will be offered exclusive discounts on the eligible titles (and their respective DLC) should they decide they want to properly own a copy for themselves. Xbox Game Pass is a new subscription service that grants users access to some of the biggest games on both Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Some notable titles expected when the service rolls out include: Halo 5: Guardians, NBA 2K16, Mad Max, LEGO Batman, and Fable III. Those that subscribe will also be given a 20 percent discount on purchasing a game from the catalogue and 10 percent off "all related add-ons". It will give you full access to over 100 titles from developers such as 2k Games, Microsoft Studios and Capcom among many other top-name companies. This means you'll be playing the games you receive as a subscriber without any of the connectivity or quality issues associated with streaming, either online or offline.

"Xbox Game Pass is your ticket to endless play", Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, wrote in a blog post announcing the service.

The Xbox Game Pass service will launch this Spring, with select members of the Xbox Insider Program having the chance to try out the service starting today.

Xbox Live Gold members will also be able to preview the service before wide distribution. With Xbox Game Pass, new games will continue rotating in every month as some games rotate out.

We'll update this story as new details become available.

By contrast, Sony's PlayStation Now subscription service is a streaming service, reliant on servers being close to the consumer, for starters.

Xbox Game Pass will run you $9.99 or the regional equivalent per month. This is a lot similar to the Netflix subscription model with movies and TV shows, except we are talking about games here.

Microsoft is now "testing Xbox Game Pass with select members of the Xbox Insider Program".

Xbox Game Pass is set to launch in 27 Xbox markets this Spring.
