Sena Mayor for city after BJP opts out of race

Sena Mayor for city after BJP opts out of race

Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena announced its candidates for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Following the certainty that Shiv Sena's mayor will be elected, the NCP too decided Saturday to support the Congress candidate. Devendra Fadnavis also said that their party has no intention to play the role of opposition in India's richest civic body.

Mahadeshwar won BMC election from ward no. 87 by beating BJP's Mahesh Parkar, Cong's Dharmesh Vyava.

Till Friday, the BJP had been looking for support from independents and smaller-party corporators to increase its numbers for the mayoral election, and had convinced Akhil Bharatiya Sena (ABS) corporator Geeta Gawli to support it. "We have chose to work as the gatekeepers of transparency, the position which will be followed by all our corporators".

Fadnavis also stated that the government would request the Lokayukta to appoint a separate Uplokayukta specifically for Mumbai so that administration can become more transparent.

He added that the decision was taken by the leaders of the party after a cabinet meeting at the chief minister's residence in Mumbai.

"In the run up to the civic election over the past year, the BJP and Sena have consistently faced off in the BMC, often taking contradictory stances on policies, from open spaces to parking". "We will not be in the opposition, we will support the ruling party but will not compromise on transparency", said Fadnavis. He also said that a committee of three retired bureaucrats would be formed to invite recommendations to ensure increased transparency in all the local bodies across the State. For 25 years BJP and Shiv Sena were together but after the recent break up Sena is being adamant and close to nearly pulling out their ministers from the state government. For the BJP, getting Sena's support in the BMC would have come at a political price or involved solidarity with Congress, NCP, and other parties.

Few days back, the ruling Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray has emerged as the number one party in the BMC polls after the results of 227 BMC seats were declared.

The BMC mayoral elections will be held on March 8.

And, when BJP attacks Sena in BMC, the latter will retaliate by attacking the state.

Senior Sena leader and transport minister Diwakar Raote expressed pleasure over the decision.
