Hyundai unveils new fuel cell concept auto at Geneva Motor Show

This new generation fuel cell is reported 20 percent lighter and 10 percent more efficient than the current-generation cells used in the Tucson ix35.

There's no word yet on when we might see a production-ready version of the FE Concept, or whether some of its features will be rolled out into existing hydrogen fuel cell products.

Hyundai Australia fuel cell program leader Scott Nargar previously told Wheels the company's work with its Japanese rival was critical to getting widespread recognition for hydrogen as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Power density is increasing significantly - by 30 percent - which Hyundai said is behind boosting the car's range that much.

"We have designed the auto to run the longest distance ever achieved by a fuel cell vehicle", says Hyundai Vice Chairman Dr. Woong-Chul Yang. Hyundai says the clean design language emphasises on the car's non-polluting nature and comes with a minimalist approach on the outside and inside.

The concept's name "FE" stands for Future Eco, reflecting the innovative new technologies that complement the car's eco-friendliness - a recognition of its unique fuel source.

Hyundai is sticking with the SUV format, to distinguish its offering from the Toyota Miari now on sale and the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell whose sales started in December. According to Hyundai, "one of the most notable characteristics of the new concept is its internal air humidifier, which recycles water emitted by the car's clean hydrogen energy circulation to create a more comfortable cabin environment".

The FE concept also features portable battery packs that users can recharge inside the vehicle and then use to charge their gadgets wherever they may go. Meanwhile, the trunk features an integrated storage and charging space for an electric scooter, demonstrating how Hyundai Motor is developing mobility solutions to match future lifestyles.

Created to be as aerodynamic as possible, the FE Fuel Cell Concept has innovative features to aid efficiency, including a rear aerofoil and integrated vents to improve airflow around the vehicle. Hyundai says that the FE Fuel Cell Concept is a glimpse at the upcoming SUV Fuel Cell model launching in 2018.

"The new technologies used in the concept vehicle will also be used in new fuel cell cars now being developed for launch early next year", it added.
