Maryland doesn't need to bail out Planned Parenthood

While the Trump administration has pointed to statistics that say Americans don't want federal funds going toward abortion, that's a misleading argument given that Planned Parenthood does not use tax dollars to pay for abortions. While the offer has not been formalized, Trump confirmed on Monday that the discussions were occurring in a statement to The New York Times.

What President Trump may fail to realize is that his offer calls on Planned Parenthood to change its mission and core values.

Republicans have long attempted to strip Planned Parenthood of the roughly $500 million in federal funding the organization receives each year. It appears to be high number, but it also means that 98 percent of women of reproductive age will never go to a Planned Parenthood in any given year for health care.

Joni Ernst, a Republican senator, argues to defund Planned Parenthood because she has seen videos in which fetal organs were being harvested post abortion.

"Maryland is on the wrong side of this issue in pursuing a bill that would continue to fund Planned Parenthood", Del.

Abortions count for about 3 percent of the Planned Parenthood's services, according to the organization's 2014 report. Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, tweeted: "Planned Parenthood is proud to provide abortion - a necessary service that's as vital to our mission as birth control or cancer screenings".

Most expected this addition to the bill, especially because the White House went on-record earlier this week urging Planned Parenthood to stop performing abortions or face an end to their federal funds.

Planned Parenthood has seven Maryland centers, including one in Frederick.

No federal funding can be made, either directly or indirectly, by Medicaid to a healthcare organization that 'provides for abortions, ' other than those done in cases of rape or incest or to save the life of the mother. In response to the newspaper, Trump said polling shows most Americans oppose public funding for abortion.

"We are not the federal government, nor do we have the resources of the federal government", he said. "And it is not their choice how we live our lives and our access to health care".

Planned Parenthood has been referred by a Congressional Panel and a U.S. Senate committee for prosecution previous year due to its alleged involvement in the sales of fetal body parts.

"Setting aside the dubious framing of Planned Parenthood as anything but an abortion giant, Phillips" claim the group is nonpartisan is problematic, particularly given its vigorous political action during the 2016 election season.
