Premier League wins order to block illegal streaming

"For the first time this will enable the Premier League to disrupt and prevent the illegal streaming of our matches via IPTV, so-called Kodi, boxes", he said.

The growing prominence of pirated viewing is likely to dent the value of the Premier League's TV rights deals with Sky and BT when the next round of contract negotiations for the Premier League comes around.

The ruling now makes it much easier for the Premier League to take "precise" action to target illegal streams.

But broadcasters and the Premier League have been fretting about the rise of Kodi set-top boxes, which allow football fans to watch live streams of copyrighted material on their TVs without paying for a subscription.

"We will continue working with ISPs, government, and other sports content producers to protect consumers from illegitimate services that offer no recourse when services are removed, provide no parental controls and, in many instances, are provided by individuals involved in other criminal activity", the Premier League said.

"Nowadays people often prefer to stream pirated content instead of using traditional torrent sites".

According to a recent survey commissioned by the security firm Irdeto, Kodi boxes are particularly prevalent in the UK. It is important to be accurate here for the sake of both existing users and those who might be interested in giving it a go.

"Most use the entirely legal Kodi software, but some are augmented with illegal third-party add-ons". This appears to suggest that there is a legal difference between streaming and downloading content, with the former being legal while the latter is not.

Several Brits have been arrested and convicted for selling the boxes with pre-loaded features that let you stream pirated content to your telly.

Earlier this week Kodi boxes came under attack from the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), after they launched a bid to try halt sales of the devices.
