Man shot, killed after threatening police with knife, gasoline

The suspect, identified only as a man in his 30s, did not yield right away but eventually pulled into a parking lot in the 100 block of West Katella Avenue, officers said.

The incident began with an attempted traffic stop for a vehicle code violation at about 11:15 p.m. Sunday, said Orange police Sgt. Rob Thorsen.

When the Orange Fire Department arrived on scene, police devised a plan to borrow a hose and use non-lethal force to extract the suspect, Lopez said. The suspect had pulled out a knife, Lopez said.

He says officers tried to arrest the man after he climbed out the driver's side window but the man pulled a knife. "It was, do we have a suicide?"

The man was barricaded in his auto for about half an hour, and authorities became concerned when he produced a lighter and gas container they thought could be flammable, Lopez said. "He actually at one point showed us the lighter and that he had something incendiary", Lopez told the Daily News.

The video, posted by KTLA News, shows the shirtless man slip to the ground as an officer tries to apprehend him. Within seconds, a powerful hose starts spraying water into the minivan's cabin. "He parked his vehicle and then refused to get out of the auto".

Police in the city 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles broke the front passenger-side window and blasted the man with water.

Shouts of "Knife! Knife!"

"We felt this guy was going to light himself on fire or blow the vehicle up", Lopez said.

Lopez says an officer then fired at the unidentified man who was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. No weapon is seen but a voice is heard yelling "knife" moments before two shots rang out.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office is investigating the incident with the assistance of the Orange Police.
