NY attorney rejected Trump's call before being fired

Schumer said he thought the removal 46 U.S. Attorneys was unusual for a new president because they had to clear out their offices immediately, without regard for ongoing casework.

According to BuzzFeed News, watchdog groups wrote to Bharara on Wednesday to ask him to investigate the president to ensure he was not receiving payments or benefits from foreign countries in violation of the emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Sessions March 10 called upon all 46 US attorneys appointed by the Obama administration to immediately tender their resignations. In 2006 George W. Bush was attacked by liberals for firing seven US attorneys. He was nominated under the younger President Bush.

Bharara, originally from India, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2009 after being nominated by then President Barack Obama.

Mr Bharara's Manhattan office handles some high profile cases in the state.

Peter F. Neronha, the USA attorney for Rhode Island, also announced his resignation Friday.

Critics of the US attorneys' dismissals say they fear the sudden move will undermine ongoing probes, perhaps one involving the president's campaign and Russian Federation.

Bharara also said in a statement that serving as a USA attorney in NY would "forever be the greatest honor" of his professional life. President Obama let some US attorneys stay on while their replacements got confirmed, although President Bill Clinton got rid of the previous GOP-appointed crop.

"I think that, again, what has been happening is that there is an air of distrust that has been brought on by President Trump himself", he added.

"The de Blasio investigations are not going to end any time soon", Hank Sheinkopf, a political pundit said.

"One hallmark of justice is absolute independence, and that was my touchstone every day that I served", he said in the statement released by the US attorney's office.

She said she met with White House Counsel Donald McGahn in January and was told "that the transition would be done in an orderly fashion to preserve continuity". "Clearly this is not the case".

A former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who requested anonymity to freely discuss the matter called Bharara's firing "crazy", saying he is a "rock star" in the law enforcement community. His relentless drive to root out public corruption, lock up terrorists, take on Wall Street, and stand up for what is right should serve as a model for all USA attorneys across the country. I have already spoken to Senator Sessions, who as you know is the nominee for attorney general.
