Rex, rubber ducky, penguin replace classic Monopoly pieces

A golden Tyrannosaurus Rex, rubber ducky, and penguin will replace the retiring silver-colored thimble, wheelbarrow, and boot.

The version of Monopoly containing the new tokens goes on sale this fall. The thimble and boot (or shoe) have been around since the original version in 1935.

Monopoly purists have been dreading this day for months: the results of January's Monopoly Token Madness vote are out, and some old favorites are getting the boot.

At the start of the year, Hasbro announced it was putting the future of Monopoly into the hands of people on the internet.

It's the first time Hasbro offered the chance for all eight tokens to be voted out of the game.

Monopoly, a board game that's fun up until about hour 15, is undergoing a massive change.

Monopoly fans from 146 countries cast a total of 4.3 million votes during the contest, Hasbro told The Huffington Post. (The piece was retired in 2007.) And in 2013, a cat token was chosen over a helicopter, diamond ring and robot. Four classic pieces survived the voting: the Scottie dog, car, top hat and battleship, some of which date as far back as the Great Depression. If you're a big fan of penguins, rubber duckies and T-rexes, you're in luck: those are the three new pieces.

Bye, bye Wheelbarrow: The wheelbarrow token, a staple in the game since the 1950s, will wheel no more.

The T. rex proved the most popular new token in the vote, coming in second place overall - right behind the Scottie dog, which received the most votes. The announcement comes two days before World Monopoly Day, March 19.
