Charley Hoffman made a 71-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to tie Kevin Kisner for the lead after three rounds of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, ranked fourth, opened on 73 while third-ranked Rory McIlroy, hoping for a fifth career major title and the completion of a career Grand Slam at next month's Masters, fired a 74.

The players as a tribute also carried Palmer's logo, the coloured umbrella on their bags. But I don't mind that, I think it's quite amusing. Except for the endless comments of encouragement from the gallery.

"I just stayed patient and got a few to roll in", said Fowler, who had started the day some 12 shots off the lead.

During his pro-am Wednesday, a woman asking for an autograph wore a shirt showing a photo that Day recognized immediately: Palmer in a golf cart clasping hands with Day, with his wife and two young children. "Hopefully I can be in with a shout and then if I get off to a fast start tomorrow, I can be right in there, so I just have to keep it going". I really stumbled onto something this week and it feels great.

From a fairway bunker, he hit 5-iron just short and into the water. You can shoot at some of those pins that in the past you haven't and I was able to take advantage of it.

Saunders is his own player, and always has been.

Known for his superior ball-striking, Grillo finished with Tour career-best 159 feet, 10 inches of putts, including a 41-foot birdie putt on the hard par-3 17th hole.
