Iowa State University President Named as New President of Auburn University

Auburn University's Board of Trustees voted Monday to hire Iowa State President Steven Leath as the university's new president.

As he told the Business Record in an interview a year ago, Leath told the recruiters that he had bought a retirement home in north-central Iowa, loved his role at Iowa State University and had no plans to leave.

After stepping down as president later this year, he will remain at Auburn teaching a higher education administration course and conducting special projects.

During a flight in 2015, Leath, a pilot, damaged the university's newly purchased Cirrus SR22 single-engine plane while he and his wife were flying home from a vacation, according to an Opelika-Auburn News report.

Iowa State University will have to begin the search for a new president.

"The first thing I would like to say is War Eagle", Leah said, opening his comments. I am proud of the many accomplishments that we achieved in economic development and community engagement.

Charles McCrary Chairman pro tem said the official action of voting for Leath took place in the Student Center to symbolize the President's dedication to serving students.

I have volunteered to work closely with the Regents to identify an interim president and start a search for a permanent president. "And there are going to be some that are upset with this decision, but I'm not going to continue to put students at risk so we can observe what to many has become a weeklong party".

The university employs 6,300 faculty and staff, and is esteemed as one of two Iowa research universities in the Association of American Universities. "I hope to turn it over to my successor better than I found it, as Dr. Gouge has done".

The Board of Regents will hold a special meeting soon to discuss the presidential transition at Iowa State. "We're a unique university, and he would need to know who we are".
