India extends $4.5 billion line of credit to Bangladesh

During the visit, India is set to announce a credit line of US$500 million (S$701 million) to Bangladesh for military supplies. Admitting that the pact was "important" for India-Bangladesh ties, Modi assured India's commitment to the issue.

The West Bengal chief minister has accepted an invitation by the government to attend the launch of some projects between the two countries as well as a lunch to be hosted by Modi in honour of Hasina.

Dhaka has insisted on breakthroughs on the niggles over water-sharing to showcase to her predominantly agrarian nation that her warm ties with India have benefited ordinary Bangladeshis. He also appreciated Bangladesh's efforts to contain religious extremism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a veiled dig at Pakistan on Saturday, saying it breeds, inspires and encourages terrorism.

"I sincerely believe that we shall be able to get India's support in resolving these issues expeditiously", the Bangladesh premier said.

To bring balance in trade between the two countries, she said her government made a decision to set up special economic zones (SEZ) for India at identified locations in Bangladesh.

The trial run of passenger train service between Bangladesh's Khulna city and Kolkata began today with the arrival of a train at Petrapole here along the Indo-Bangla border.

Minutes later, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi stepped into the room. Race Course Road, where the Prime Minister's residence is located, was renamed as Lok Kalyan Marg previous year.

Bangladesh Foreign Ministry sources were quoted by the Daily Star as saying that there was also a silk sari as gift for the Indian President's daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee.

At an event to honour martyrs of the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war, he said there were three main ideologies in South Asia at present.

This is her first bilateral visit to India in seven years. "The mentality which influences those who plan policies under it and which regards terrorism as higher than humanism, destruction greater than development and annihilation better than creation", Modi said at Delhi's Sam Manekshaw centre.

"It is also a time to remember the cruel attack on Bangladesh that took thousands of lives".

"The goal of this genocide was not just killing the innocents, but to uproot the idea of Bangladesh", he said.

"India has always stood for the prosperity of Bangladesh, we are a long standing and trusted development partner of Bangladesh", PM Modi said.

"Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a friend of India. We strongly condemn and protest this", he said. The book was released after bilateral talks between the two leaders.
