Microsoft to buy Kubernetes container-orchestration vendor Deis

In February 2017, Microsoft has finally announced the general availability of Kubernetes to Microsoft Azure Container Service. Paired with their cloud leadership and unambiguous support for open source software, we are impressed by the breadth, depth and reach of Microsoft to help define, shape and build new cloud-native applications. "We look forward to making Azure the best place to run containerized workloads", he wrote.

Deis' technical expertise will boost Microsoft's container services, including Linux and Windows Server Containers, Hyper-V Containers and Azure Container Service, according to a company blog post.

Microsoft's acquisition of the company provides proof that Kubernetes is beating out rival technologies at the container orchestration layer, said Mike Kavis, principal architect at Cloud Technology Partners, a Boston-based solution provider.

Microsoft acquired the company from Engine Yard, a platform-as-a-service provider that previously purchased Deis in 2015.

Both sides have not revealed how much the acquisition will be worth.

Many enterprises, including Microsoft shops, are still in the testing phase with containers, so Microsoft has time to get Windows and Kubernetes to work together.

"Over the years, we have worked hard to be open, reliable, and dependable open source maintainers".

Deis has led many open source projects, including Helm, Workflow and Steward, offering solutions for developers building, deploying, managing and scaling applications on Kubernetes.

Microsoft is once again on a shopping spree, adding another key technology and new capability to the fast-growing Microsoft Azure cloud business. Container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes, originally developed by Google Inc., provide the environment and automation scaffolding. Azure Stack aims to bring numerous features of Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform into the enterprise data center and with this update, it's getting some big features that aim to deliver a better deployment and operational experience.

For Microsoft, Azure is the company's future from not only an infrastructure perspective but also for revenue.

The companies shared no details on when the deal is expected to close.
