Shooting at Coral Gables mall leaves one person dead

The shooter, identified as Abeku Wilson, 33, came into the gym at 12:55 P.M., shooting his former colleague Mario Hortis, a 42-year-old trainer, and fatally wounding 35-year-old gym manager Janine Ackerman.

A fitness trainer at a gym in Coral Gables, Fla., opened fire, wounding two coworkers before he turned the gun on himself on Saturday, witnesses said.

One person is dead, and two others are injured after a shooting inside the Equinox Gym at the Village of Merrick Park Saturday. "Our love, prayers and condolences are with both families during this bad time". "He said, "I'm sorry I'm just off balance this morning". A trainer who had been axed earlier in the day opened fire in front of gym members and then committed suicide before their eyes.

"This was a dispute involving people that worked at the Equinox gym".

UM student Gabby Rosenbloom was at the Shops during the shooting to advertise a show for the UM theatre department when she and her friend saw people running.

Computer records show two arrests for Wilson on what appeared to be relatively minor offenses: leaving the scene of an accident in 2011 and a charge usually tied to a missed court appearance in 2013.

Ackerman was shot in the head during the gunfire and was pronounced dead after being flown to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the Miami Herald reports.

A police spokesman confirmed Hortis's death Sunday afternoon.

Client Eveliny Bastos-Klein, who had just finished a training session with Wilson before the chaos ensued, said that she "didn't notice anything amiss" and had scheduled another workout with him for Wednesday. Miami-Dade County Police told The Huffington Post, "This was not an act of random violence". In response to that incident, Equinox chose to fire Wilson, the source said.

"Five gunshots", Ovi Viera, who was washing his hands in the men's locker room, told The Miami Herald.

Equinox sent an email to their members on Sunday addressing the incident and reassuring customers of safety.
