Bastia supporters charge at Lyon in latest French hooligan incident

Bastia supporters charge at Lyon in latest French hooligan incident

Home supporters poured onto the pitch as they attempted to protect themselves from firecrackers and other objects raining down from the stands above. At that point, the referee chose to cancel the game as Bastia will likely receive a hefty ban. Players from both teams went back to their changing rooms before calm was restored.

In February, Bastia were ordered to close part of their stadium for three matches after a group of supporters shouted racist insults at Nice striker Mario Balotelli during a 1-1 draw in January.

"Following the new incident at the end of the first period, the LFP chose to definitively stop the game between Bastia and Lyon", the French professional football league (LFP) said in a statement. "He and Memphis [Depay] tried to move them out of the way before being attacked by many SC Bastia fans".

Stewards and Lyon staff rushed onto the pitch to intervene and for a few minutes there was chaos and scuffles until the playing surface was cleared.

"Bastia fans kicked balls into Gorgelin [the Lyon's keeper]'s goal".

It has been a hard week for Lyon with crowd trouble before their game with Besiktas on Thursday.

According to Lyon's club TV channel, the players were told to return to the dressing room after boarding the team bus as local officials couldn't guarantee their safety on exit.

The French league said it would investigate and urged Bastia to ban the fans responsible.

It is the second time in a week that Lyon have had a delayed start to a match, after Thursday's Europa League meeting with Besiktas started 45 minutes late as a result of visiting fans throwing projectiles and fireworks at the home supporters.

Alexander Lacazette, Lyon's top goalscorer, was not in the squad but tweeted: "Pffff shameful!"
