With hot-hitting Jose Ramirez up, the runners executed a double steal. Justin Verlander had one of his worst.

With the win the Tigers hold onto first place in the AL Central and move to 8-4 on the year. Ramirez had a career-high six RBIs Saturday.

"Sometimes it makes me laugh, and other times it really motivates me", Ramirez said through a translator. He's had that those back issues flare up as long as I've been here.

Jose Iglesias doubled in the fifth and later scored when Nick Castellanos grounded out to short.

Jeremy Hellickson (2-0) allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings. The 2011 AL Cy Young Award victor and MVP also gave up nine runs against the Chicago White Sox on April 6, 2008, and versus Texas on May 25, 2014.

Justin Verlander has had rough games against the Indians.

"When you're playing in your division you always want to win", Detroit Manager Brad Ausmus said.

"I don't know; I do know it's a little different", Francona said about whether Chisenhall's time at third base helped him transition to the outfield.

Avila struck out looking in the second, drew a walk in the fourth and then hit his second career home run off Bauer in the sixth.

Last year Verlander and Kluber finished second and third respectively in the Cy Young Award voting, behind Boston's Rick Porcello.

So, what is there to say about three-game series between the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers that begins April 14 at Progressive Field?

Santana had three hits of Cleveland's 19 hits and four RBIs, including a two-run homer in the second. They have lost six of their last seven games and have been outscored 40-16 in those games.

Royals 3, Angels 2: Mike Moustakas' fifth home run this season, a drive off off Jose Alvarez (0-1), broke an eighth-inning tie and Kansas City defeated Los Angeles at Kansas City, Missouri.

Ramirez drove a 97 miles per hour fastball from Verlander into the right field seats in the first. Alex Avila added a two-run shot and Francisco Rodriguez secured the save. Even with a two-hit night on Friday, Encarnacion is still only hitting.192, with one home run and one RBI.

Detroit Tigers' JaCoby Jones reacts after being struck out by Cleveland Indians relief pitcher Cody Allen to end the ninth inning of a 13-6 Indians victory in a baseball game, Saturday, April 15, 2017, in Cleveland.

Cleveland's Edwin Encarnacion, signed to a $60 million, three-year contract in January, was 1 for 4 with two strikeouts and is batting.205 (9 for 44). "He's just not quite there yet".

While this was a thoroughly satisfying moment in the 2017 season, it was the next home run that was the most enjoyable to see.

Detroit recalled right-hander Warwick Saupold from Toledo and optioned right-hander William Ceuvas to the Triple-A team. "Lonnie's been so good about - from the very first day in Oakland - about getting behind that ball and making tougher plays easier and then also being ready to throw".

Tigers: LHP Matthew Boyd threw six shutout innings against Minnesota on Tuesday and is to make his first career start against Cleveland on Sunday. It will be Carrasco's first start vs. Detroit since September 17 when Detroit 2B Ian Kinsler hit a line drive back to the mound on Carrasco's second pitch of the game, breaking Carrasco's right hand.
