Liverpool beat West Brom 1-0, retake 3rd place in EPL

Liverpool's win leaves them third in the league as they moved back above Manchester City - who beat Southampton 3-0 on Saturday.

It was generally a poor first half of football at the Hawthorns with the best early chance falling to Hal Robson-Kanu.

"When the ball is in the air, what can you do?"

Coutinho stretched to volley off target on the end of Firmino's raking 24th-minute pass but Liverpool were struggling for fluency - Adam Lallana's ongoing absence through a hamstring injury being keenly felt in midfield.

With a forgettable half meandering towards its conclusion, Klopp's men took the lead in stoppage time.

It was, nearly inevitably, Firmino who broke the deadlock at the end of an unenthralling half, as James Milner's free kick was flicked on by Lucas into the path of the 25-year-old forward, who swooped unmarked at the far post to head home.

Liverpool nearly added a wonderful second 11 minutes into the second period. After the interval, Milner had a chance to make it 2-0 but he volleyed over at the far post from Firmino's cross from the right.

West Brom introduced three substitutes in an effort to change the pattern of the game but they were met with stubborn resistance from the visitors.

With just over ten minutes remaining, however, Mignolet made a fantastic save to keep out Phillips, who was played in on goal by substitute Salomon Rondon after a fine counter-attacking run.

The Brazilian converted a flick-on from Lucas Leiva to seal a fifth win in their last seven games for Liverpool.

"In the second half, we did this much better".

- Liverpool have won 66 points from 33 games this season; six points more than they picked up in the entirety of 2015-16.

But, having already racked up some terse tussles with Albion boss Tony Pulis during his time in the Premier League, Klopp found it impossible to relax.

"It is the Premier League, Arsenal have three, four, five games in hand (in fact three) so we should not think about this", Klopp said.
