Montgomery impresses in debut as Yanks rally past Rays 8-4

Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda has a flawless game through six innings against the Tampa Bay Rays in New York's home opener. Running hard on a comebacker, Gardner slammed into Weeks, who had not played first in the major leagues before this season and stayed in the baseline as he reached for reliever Xavier Cedeno's poor throw.

After Judge's single against Diaz tied the score 3-3 in the sixth, the Yankees had runners at the corners and one out when Gardner batted for Pete Kozma and hit a comebacker.

Both players left the game; Weeks confirmed he was day-to-day with a bone bruise in his shoulder and would likely not need a trip to the disabled list.

Former Mississippi quarterback Chad Kelly has had surgery on his right wrist just weeks before the National Football League draft and won't be able to throw for the next three months.

It would be easy for me to cop out and say "Incomplete" for Montgomery's first game grade but I won't.

Weeks had hit his first home run of 2017 in the first inning, a two-run shot off Yankees lefty Jordan Montgomery, who was making his Major League Baseball debut.

Back at the scene of his major league debut, Blake Snell fell apart before he could be rewarded with his third career win against the Yankees. The Yankees made a decision to move Luis Severino back a day to give Montgomery the start after the 24-year-old pitched five innings of one-run, three-hit ball with Class A Tampa as a tune-up. Montgomery tossed four ideal innings to close out a combined no-hitter with two other pitchers before making two starts.

"I think the consistency is what separated him, and when we watched him, there was deception", Girardi said.

Montgomery threw 61 of 89 pitches for strikes, including 17 missed swings.

Catcher Kyle Higashioka, who made his first start for the Yankees, had caught Montgomery more than two dozen times in the minors. On Wednesday, the Yankees won again 8-4.

Errors by shortstop Tim Beckham and Cedeno led to four unearned runs.

"We've got to play a cleaner game for sure to win", Rays manager Kevin Cash said.

Montgomery allowed three hits on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in 4.2 innings.

Yankees: RHP James Kaprielian, the 16th overall draft pick in 2015, could be headed to Tommy John surgery after an evaluation by Dr. Neil ElAttrache.

Yankees flamethrower Luis Severino (0-0, 7.20 ERA) will oppose Rays' righty Matt Andriese (0-0, 9.00 ERA).
