Piscotty agrees to $33.5 million, 6-year with Cardinals

"Tough, contested games from start to finish".

The Cubs shut out the Cardinals that night and went on to win that series. Chicago came up with four dazzling plays to take away hits, including Albert Almora's leaping grab above the center field wall to deny Matt Adams a tying homer in the seventh.

"I saw Jim Edmonds before the game, and I said 'Almora reminds me of you, '" Maddon said.

#Cubs Arrieta: "The catch to rob the homer was a game saver. My stuff is good, I've just to go out there and be aggressive with it and let them put the ball in play". Kolten Wong then hit a ball to Baez, who misplayed it.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny asked for a review, but replay confirmed what Quinn Wolcott accurately called: The ball barely beat Wong, and Chicago was able to celebrate. Yeah, Joe talked to me and told me that as well yesterday, and I thought it was a great comparison. He was 2-1 with a 5.56 ERA in three spring-training starts and one relief appearance.

In the fourth inning against the Detroit Tigers, Ol' Diz was sent in to pinch run for Spud Davis, who had singled to right field batting for starting pitcher Dazzy Vance (yes, the Cardinals' staff had a Dizzy, a Dazzy and a Daffy that season). Finally, after several Cubs infielders wiffed on an infield single, Piscotty attempted to make it to home, only to be nailed in the head with a Javier Baez throw. To make matters worse, Baez's errant throw home missed Willson Contreras' mitt and instead nailed Piscotty directly on his helmet ear flap, leaving him motionless on the ground for some time.

This isn't the first time Piscotty has been in a scary incident on the field.

Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty was a little shaken, but perfectly fine Wednesday when he arrived at Busch Stadium, and is cleared to play in Thursday's makeup game against the Chicago Cubs.

"Never seen that before", said Matheny.

Sunday's season opener was a good microcosm of the Cubs offense as a whole; ugly and strikeout prone when it is off as it was for most of the game, and risky when on as it was in tying the game with a ninth-inning three-run rally against a very strong closer in Seung-Hwan Oh. After getting the first two outs in the sixth inning, the Cardinals loaded the bases on Arrieta and brought newly minted Cubs killer Randal Grichuk to the plate. Well, not with Jake Arrieta pitching.

No matter how long they might be held hostage in St. Louis. Oakland reliever John Axford was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to Sunday with a strained right shoulder.

Piscotty then made a decision to try and steal second by running on the pitch.
