Trump to nominate Scott Brown as ambassador to New Zealand

Trump will nominate former United States senator Scott Brown to serve as ambassador New Zealand, the White House said Thursday.

Brown backed Trump during the presidential campaign and was rewarded with the cushy gig in the Southwestern Pacific nation known for its handsome beaches, volcanoes and dramatic views of Mount Victoria.

The White House announced the plan on Thursday (US time) but Mr Brown will need to be confirmed by the Senate before getting on a plane.

Brown served as MA senator, winning the seat in a special election in 2010, after the death of Sen.

He ran for a full Senate term in 2012, but lost the seat to Elizabeth Warren, the darling of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

Strong speculation in February that Brown would be Trump's pick prompted a backlash in New Zealand due to Brown's controversial past, which includes an ongoing sexual harassment lawsuit brought by a US TV host.

A commentator on Fox News, he was rumored early on to be under consideration for a number of positions in the Trump administration. He also served in the National Guard for over 30 years.

Ambassadorships are often political appointments given to individuals who have have donated to or supported a president's campaign.
