Kentucky's unemployment rate decreases to 5 percent in May

The May rate of 3.2 percent is well below the same month previous year, which had a 3.9 percent unemployment rate. "The state's strong economy and the growing workforce needs of businesses are the main drivers of this", said DWD Commissioner Steven Braun. That represents the number of people working or actively looking for a job.

Maine's unemployment rate achieved 3.0 percent in March, the lowest in 40 years. The national rate in May was 4.3 percent and it was 9 percent in January 2011.

Statewide, nine of 11 industry sectors added 242,600 jobs year-over-year, up 1.5%. California added 17,600 jobs for a total of 16.7 million. Due to rounding, the unemployment rate was unchanged from April at 2.3 percent, the released stated.

Preliminary estimates from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics show the state added 2,900 jobs in May. "They trust that we can provide them with skilled workers as they create jobs by expanding or opening new facilities in the state".

Maryland gained jobs in mining, logging and construction, trade, transportation and utilities, retail, and professional and business services.

Zeller said the growth in government jobs in May was promising.

Omaha's unemployment rate was unchanged at 2.9 percent.

Oil and gas led job growth with 6,600 new jobs, followed by construction and financial activities, amid fears that labor shortages could curtail the recovery of drilling in the red-hot Permian Basin.

Non-farm employment in the Norfolk area saw steady growth again, though, gaining 93 jobs in May. Kershaw County's rate remained at 3.9 percent.
