Atari is making a new game console

Others had no idea what the video was showing about a "brand new Atari product years in the making". Last week, a product called the Ataribox was teased and met with skepticism by some who thought it was just a prank, but CEO Fred Chesnais has confirmed that his company is, in fact, working on new hardware.

But Atari's claiming that this new console was "years in the making". The site offered nothing more than a short video and appears to have been made with a free website builder.

Chesnais did not detail the console any further but stated it was based on "PC technology" and that the design is still in development.

One possible incarnation of what this Ataribox will be is the easy money idea of an Atari version of an NES Classic Edition that packages built-in classic Atari games like this guy. The brief teaser shows a glimpse at some hardware that looks very much like a sleek remake of the classic Atari 2600, complete with wood paneling.

The new AtariBox is a big deal for the company that has been put through various obstacles in the past that also includes filing bankruptcy in 2013.

Despite how insane it sounds to hear that Atari of all companies is trying to get back into the console race, it's actually within the realm of possibility. So, is Atari actually trying to build something to compete with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo?
