A ballgame of unity, spirit, friendly rivalry, won by Dems

Trump made his comments as Scalise remained in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center following multiple surgeries.

Lawmakers of all parties are decrying the heinous act of a gunman who opened fire on Wednesday on Republican lawmakers who were practicing near Washington for a charity baseball game.

Many lawmakers wore purple and gold hats and shirts emblazoned with the LSU logo in a show of support for Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was shot one day earlier during the Republican team's practice for the annual event.

Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation.

Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center says "an excellent recovery is a good possibility", but says Scalise faces additional surgeries, a long hospital stay and rehabilitation. Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.

They said that his "risk of death" has substantially lowered than when he arrived at the hospital.

Senior US Republican congressman Steve Scalise is showing sign of improvement and is speaking with loved ones after being shot at a baseball game near Washington, DC last week.

On Thursday, the hospital reiterated that Scalise will need more operations and will be in the hospital "for some time".

Top Republican politician Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded from critical to serious after he was gunned down at a party baseball practice outside Washington.

Law enforcement officials proceeded Friday with their investigation of the attack at a suburban Virginia park, including examining Hodgkinson's social media activities and his home in Belleville, Illinois.

But Flake said the final score wasn't likely to matter this year.

Investigators said Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers, and Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful". Two officers were shot, as were congressional aide Zach Barth and lobbyist Matt Mika.

The FBI said it had processed a white conversion van owned by Hodgkinson, which was parked at the YMCA adjacent to where the shooting happened. That lasted until the end of the seven-inning game.

President Trump urged Americans on Thursday to pray for Rep. Steve Scalise as he fights for life a day after being shot on a baseball field. Trump sat by Scalise's bedside and met with his wife Jennifer, as well as Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner, who was also wounded in the attack, and her wife.
