Special prosecutor 'investigating business dealings of Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner'

It follows President Donald Trump's decision to assemble a team of outside lawyers to represent him through the Justice Department special counsel's investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

A member of President Donald Trump's outside legal team is defending Trump's use of social media. "Nice", Trump said on Twitter Thursday morning.

A close Trump associate said this week the president was considering firing Mueller, although the White House later denied it. Comey said he told the president on three occasions that he wasn't personally under investigation.

In just one month since Robert Mueller was appointed by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein to oversee the Department of Justice investigation, he has made bold moves in putting together a team of experienced attorneys.

According to Thursday's Post report, investigators have also been looking into the financial dealings of other Trump associates, including former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and former foreign-policy adviser Carter Page.

Gorelick is a partner at the WilmerHale law firm. Basically, it's not surprising he is part of the Russian Federation investigation.

"We do not know what this report refers to. And so that was his view throughout", Comey said.

Himes says it's important for the committee to conduct its investigation right rather than quickly.

Jared Kushner has been represented on business matters and other issues by Jamie Gorelick. Kushner has been discussing the matter with Abbe Lowell, a prominent trial lawyer.

USA TODAY previously reported that the FBI was investigating Kushner for his contact with Russian officials, but there was no word at that time that his financial dealings were part of the probe. Flynn was forced to resign for misleading administration officials about his contacts with Russia's U.S. ambassador.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein warned against trusting anonymous sources late Thursday night, shortly before The Washington Post published a damaging story about White House adviser Jared Kushner that relied on unnamed US officials as sources.

Starr investigated former President Bill Clinton in the late 1990's.

In another tweet, Trump called it "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

Attorney Jay Sekulow is stressing that "the president has not been and is not under investigation". Mueller's investigation now encompasses the president's firing of Comey, the Russian government's role during the election, whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russian officials and alleged financial crimes committed by Trump associates.

The White House confirmed on Thursday that Mueller was interviewed - presumably about again running the Federal Bureau of Investigation - the day before he was named as special counsel to investigate Russian meddling in last year's presidential election.
