Pence Reacts to New York Times' Article Suggesting Shadow Campaign

Earlier this weekend, the Times reported on possible quiet attempts by Republicans to run for president in 2020, regardless of whether or not Trump tries to seek a second term.

Pence's press secretary Marc Lotter previously denied the explosive report, dismissing it as "nothing more than wishful thinking for the New York Times".

Such rumors started spreading after Mike Pence's statements about Russian Federation, different than President Trump's public comments.

The Times said it conducted interviews with more than 75 Republicans at every level of the party, elected officials, donors and strategists who expressed "widespread uncertainty" about whether Trump would be on the GOP ballot in 2020.

Sunday's NY Times story "Republican Shadow Campaign for 2020 Takes Shape as Trump Doubt Grows" says that Pence "appears to be cementing his status as President Trump's heir apparent, promoting himself as the conduit between Republican donors and the administration".

Pence says Sunday's story in The New York Times is "disgraceful and offensive". "Any suggestion otherwise is both laughable and absurd", Pence wrote in his statement.

On a trip to Eastern Europe last week, Pence condemned Russia's presence in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, with which Moscow fought a brief war in 2008.

Lately, there have been quite a few rumors about the possibility of Vice President Mike Pence looking forward to announce a presidential bid for 2020. He also said ties with Russian Federation would not improve until Moscow changed its stance on Ukraine and withdrew support for countries like Iran, Syria and North Korea. "Don't worry about a Congress that isn't supporting legislation to get big-ticket items done".

"Our relationship with Russian Federation is at an all-time & very unsafe low", Trump wrote on Twitter after signing the bill.

"It is absolutely true that the vice president is getting ready for 2020-for reelection as vice president", said Ms. Conway on ABC's "This Week". "It's completely feasible that there will be long, drawn-out Republican primary for Trump to be renominated", Repubican consultant Rob Stutzman said at a conference recently.

"Vice-President Pence is a very loyal, very dutiful, but also incredibly effective vice-president, and active vice-president", she said.

"(Pence) is a peer to the president in the West Wing", she said.
