Suspect enters not guilty plea for suspect in Missouri officer's death

William Noble, 35, has been charged with tampering with physical evidence in felony prosecution.

Officer Michael made a traffic stop on a vehicle for a registration violation. From the site of the crash, the driver fled on foot, Lowe said.

He also was wanted at the time of his arrest on a warrant out of Johnson County, Missouri, issued in 2015 for unlawful possession of a firearm.

At that point, police claim Noble 'acted visibly upset and faked crying'.

Noble said he "panicked" when he found the rifle back at his home on Monday and threw it into a creek near Clinton. He eventually changed his story and acknowledged that McCarthy asked him to buy the rifle for him. Noble provided police a written statement about selling the firearm to McCarthy.

As the officers were getting ready to leave, one of them asked Noble if he knew where the gun was.

When Noble asked what kind of weapon was used to kill the officer, an investigator with the highway patrol told him, "He knew the answer to this question", according to the affidavit.

Noble then said that on August 7, he came home around 2 a.m. from Lee's Summit, walked into his house, and saw the rifle leaning against the inside doorway.

Lowe earlier said that a gun had been found in a creek about two miles north of Clinton. He then went with officers to the intersection of NW 300th Road and NW 131st Road. He did not appear to have a job since arriving in Clinton about four years ago to visit a friend he met while playing video games on line.

Investigators have said it's possible that other people helped McCarthy by giving him a ride or clothes.

A suspect in Michael's death, 39-year-old Ian McCarthy, was arrested late Tuesday after a two-day manhunt and is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. As Officer Michael exited the patrol vehicle to make contact with McCarthy, he's accused of firing a round towards the officer, fatally striking him.
