National Football League suspends Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott 6 games

The NFL's explanation of why it suspended Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott and its letter to Elliott mentioned photographic evidence of his alleged domestic violence against his former girlfriend. Elliott has denied the accusation and the Columbus (Ohio) City Attorney's office refused to press charges.

According to Schefter, Elliott is expected to appeal the suspension.

Under the terms of the NFL's personal conduct policy, players who have committed domestic violence are subject to "a baseline" suspension of six games without pay. Any ruling would be considered binding.

The Dallas Cowboys have a bye in Week 6, meaning Elliott won't be eligible to return to the field until Week 8 if the six-game suspension stands after his appeal. Many coaches and players on the Cowboys did not expect this result for Elliott. Elliott was accused by his ex-girlfriend, Tiffany Thompson, of five domestic violence incidents over a six-day span in Columbus, Ohio. "The league also consulted with medical experts". No charges were filed, but the National Football League can punish a player without legal charges.

We knew Ezekiel Elliott's suspension was likely coming soon, we just didn't know when it would be announced, or what the terms would be.

And based on the claims of innocence by himself, and the adamant public support from owner Jerry Jones, they undoubtedly will do so. And in July, he was involved in an altercation at a Dallas nightclub during which a DJ's nose was broken.

Elliott was seen in a legal marijuana shop during the preseason in Seattle previous year and was caught on video pulling down a woman's shirt during a St. Patrick's Day parade in Dallas this past spring. He also scored 15 rushing touchdowns and caught 32 passes for 363 yards with one touchdown.

The Cowboys open the season against the Giants Week 1.
