And no excuses from the Yankees.

Meantime, let's have a little fun with a game of what if. "So certainly we need to try and go out and win the series [Sunday night]".

"And as dominant as he's been, with the exception of an outing or two, we're talking about a difference-maker in the standings, in the feel of the team, what he means to our team".

In New York, he is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in five games (four starts) and the current Yankees roster is a combined 19-for-96 (.198) against Sale.

Most significantly, on Saturday Masahiro Tanaka joined CC Sabathia on the 10-day disabled list with arm soreness that the Yankees labeled as shoulder inflammation. He is expected to make the start. The loss snapped Severino's six-start unbeaten streak.

The Yankees got a stadium-aided two-run homer from Gary Sanchez against Pomeranz in the first inning, but he went on to pitch the next six innings surrendering just one more run on four more hits.

"He wasn't executing his pitches today, " Joe Girardi said. He's been so good and executing so well. "But it just shows that he's human".

The Yankees needed better than human. He retired six of the last seven batters he faced.

After back-to-back walks in the third inning, the Red Sox almost hit into a crushing double play when Eduardo Nunez hit a sharp grounder to third base, but Todd Frazier bobbled it, and instead of turning two, the error loaded the bases with no outs. Instead, the bases were loaded. "I guess that's cool". "I caught it but tried rushing the throw and couldn't get a handle on the ball". Big mistake, but you know, Sevy's so good, I thought we were going to get out of it.

"I remember that excitement, coming to the ballpark and watching these games", he said. "That's part of the game".

Boston Red Sox's Brock Holt, left, celebrates with teammates Andrew Benintendi, second from left, Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr., right, after a baseball game against the New York Yankees, Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, in New York. His second made it 8-3 in the fifth.

Aaron Hicks woke everyone up with his bat, then made a rocket of a throw, preserving a ninth-inning lead with a double play that electrified fans and bailed out Aroldis Chapman in yet another Yankees-Red Sox thriller.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Benintendi was the youngest Red Sox player to drive in six runs against the Yankees since the RBI became an official statistic in 1920. The only run he allowed in that game was a home run to Headley.

Cabrera stung his former team with a two-run shot to erase a 4-3 deficit in the eighth. The major league record is 36 by Adam Dunn in 2011-12. He said he doesn't think he'll be out too long. "I can't say there's been anything fundamentally he's changed, he's got a attractive swing and he's a natural looking hitter but prior to the date we were talking about, he was just missing some pitches that he's otherwise squared up and he's back doing that".

The Rays are a dark horse to secure the American League (AL) wildcard and may even be in contention for the AL East title, and Austin Pruitt is becoming a dark horse second-half pitcher. Jordan Montgomery gets the ball, and he is 7-6 with a 4.05 ERA and 111 strikeouts this season. No starter has been named for Monday night's game against the Mets in the beginning of a four-game interleague series. Montgomery, a left-hander who was sent to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last Sunday to conserve his innings after the Yankees acquired Sonny Gray and Jaime Garcia just before the trade deadline, was recalled Friday to take Sabathia's place.

"It's not what you want this time of year, " Girardi said of the rotation. "We've had a couple people nicked up". Guys are going to have to step up.
