Real Madrid beat Barcelona despite Ronaldo red card for diving

Barcelona manager, Ernesto Valverde, has admitted his side were not as clinical as Real Madrid, in their 3-1 defeat in the Spanish Super Cup first leg on Sunday.

Gerard Pique scored an own goal to put Madrid in the lead when his attempted clearance from a Marcelo cut back some how ended in his own net.

Cristiano Ronaldo was shown a yellow card for taking off when celebrating his goal.

He then had a penalty shout but was instead given a second booking for simulation، and reacted very poorly in appearing to push the referee as he went off.

Madrid and Barca meet in the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana at Camp Nou, with Ceballos set for his first official outing after signing from Real Betis for a reported €18million.

Real Madrid looked for all the world like the would double their lead five minutes later as Karim Benzema danced his way through the area before cutting the ball back across the face of goal for Dani Carvajal, whose shot was somehow kept out point-blank at the far-post. He sprinted down the left flank with the score tied 1-1 against rivals Barcelona. Messi was given the chance to take his "clasico" goal record to 24 against Madrid when Luis Suarez was fouled by goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Real Madrid won the domestic championship last season and also prevailed in the Champions League. We know that playing against Barcelona is extra special.

CR7 only returned to training a few days ago and as a result was named on the bench for the first-leg meeting at the Nou Camp.

Marco Asensio has reportedly requested "emergency talks" with Real Madrid over suggestions that Arsenal want to sign the Spaniard in this summer's transfer window.

Do you think the sending off was harsh on Ronaldo?

Madrid started the game on a gig note and their effort was rewarded by a goal from Casemiro who hit the bar earlier in the game.

The versatile midfielder has since managed to resurrect his career at Guangzhou, earning a regular place in the Brazil national team alongside Barcelona target Philippe Coutinho and Neymar, now of Paris Saint-Germain.

And with Barca pushing forward, Madrid picked the hosts off on the counter-attack when Asensio blasted into the top corner from the edge of the box as the game entered stoppage time to all but assure they will lift the Super Cup for a 10th time.
