Patriots fear Rivers will miss season with knee injury

The Patriots ' top draft choice of 2017 may be done for the season. Now, the Patriots will have to cultivate depth at defensive end from within the roster or look to free agency for additional help. The team traded for Kony Ealy during the off-season, who has shown flashes of great potential during his tenure with the Carolina Panthers.

The specific nature of Rivers' injury remains unknown.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported an initial MRI revealed Rivers tore his ACL and sprained his LCL, per a source informed of the situation.

Elsewhere on the edge of the Patriots' defensive line, fellow rookie Deatrich Wise missed this week's practices due to a head injury, presumably a concussion, suffered during the team's first preseason game against the Jaguars.

New England Patriots rookie defensive end Derek Rivers was recently sent back to New England for further evaluation regarding a left leg and possible knee injury that he suffered during practice on Wednesday, according to Mike Giardi of CSN New England. Players like Dwight Freeney will likely be in the mix as like Rivers he has the ability to play as a pass rushing linebacker when needed.

Rivers was expected to see significant playing time in the regular season.
