Rangers facing criticism for refusing to swap home series with Astros

The Astros have not played in Houston since August 24, and if the Mets series gets moved to St. Petersburg, their string of games away from home will stretch to 19. "You guys have our home series - we'll take your home series, '" Ryan said, according to Stefan Stevenson of the Star-Telegram. "We don't want to distract from that debating about where a baseball game is played".

BREAKING: AP Source: Astros to play Rangers, Mets series at Tropicana Field in Florida. "They wanted all six games at their park".

Another likely factor from the Rangers' perspective was that a home-series swap would have put them on the road for 12 consecutive games from September 15-27. Going on the road to Houston from September 25-27 would extend their road trip to almost two whole weeks.

"It would have been a four-city road trip before we came home to finish it up".

MLB and the MLB Players Association also announced Monday that the two entities will jointly donate $1 million to relief efforts for the damage suffered throughout Texas caused by Harvey, including the American Red Cross. The Rangers would have played 12 straight September road games before finishing at home with the A's, not a friendly schedule for a wild-card hopeful.

With the city of Houston experiencing this tragedy, the Tampa Bay Rays have opened their doors to the Astros and Rangers to play on their field. That game was moved from Houston's NRG Stadium to the Cowboys' AT&T Stadium, proving that these things can indeed be worked out.

"Efforts are underway in New Orleans and we will work with the fans, the Superdome, the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau and both schools throughout the week to ensure the most optimal game day experience for all", said Pete Derzis, ESPN senior vice president of college sports programming and events.

The good news is that many Astros players have received word from their families that everyone is safe and they are doing OK, considering. Unlike the 2008 Astros team, the outcome of these games should not derail the season.

Sources said moving the series to Citi Field, with the Astros officially designated as the home team, had been a possibility early in deliberations, but as talks continued, that option became increasingly unlikely.

The Rangers have stated they will donate part of the 50/50 raffles from this week's game to the American Red Cross.

These Astros have only one other homestand in September - nine games in 10 days against the Seattle Mariners, Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels from Sept. 15-24.
