Delhi: Two people killed in Ghazipur landfill collapse

"Visited Ghazipur site. It's a man-made disaster". Its man made disaster. The Bhalswa landfill site commissioned in 1993 and became functional in 1994 but due to lack of any garbage management laws, the site turned into a garbage mountain.

He asked the civic body to use modern technology to manage solid waste. Five people were pulled out from a canal running behind the garbage dump site in first three hours of the rescue operation. As for the garbage which was earlier being dumped at Ghazipur will now be diverted to Ranikhera near Delhi-Haryana border.

"Unfortunately, even after the Ghazipur incident, BJP is not in a mood to leave its dirty politics and is trying to push off its failures on Delhi government".

"Two landfill sites, one each in north and east Delhi, have been identified and fresh garbage will be dumped there".

Authorities deployed 10 fire tenders at the spot to help in the rescue. It fell into the canal, which swept away two bikes, a scooty and a taxi into the adjacent canal.

Delhi produces over 8,500 MTD of solid waste, but all three of its dumping grounds, with a collective capacity of 4,600 MTD are operating beyond their saturation point, at the "risk of human lives", according to official documents. All the people who went on that road can't bear the smell from the site.

East Delhi mayor Neema Bhagat, when contacted, said a portion of the garbage mound collapsed because of the rains. Also, all the vehicles that submerged into the canal were retrieved, including a JCB. "We have taken out five persons from the canal and rushed them to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital here", a DFS official said. The Ghazipur landfill in east corporation is the oldest functional landfill in the city. It was started in 1984 and is spread over 29 acres.

According to locals, a heap of trash a 50-Metre Mountain of garbage "broke off and collapsed".
