Stricker makes captains picks for upcoming Presidents Cup

Stricker makes captains picks for upcoming Presidents Cup

"I've had my eye on the 11th spot as it came down to a tight race between two very talented players".

Mickelson was in danger of missing his first Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup since 1993.

"My excitement to be on this team is as great as it's been for any team I've been on", he said.

Now, he gets another crack at it. "Obviously, I feel there's some unfinished business. I'm motivated to go out there and make a positive contribution to the team".

After a slew of disappointing results, including missed cuts at the last two majors, Mickelson's Presidents Cup streak was put in jeopardy with Stricker saying the 47-year-old American needed to "show me something" to earn a captain's pick.

The matches start September 28 at Liberty National in New Jersey, where Mickelson has a corporate membership. The U.S. side has won six straight editions of this bi-annual event.

"He made eight birdies in the final round at TPC Boston on Monday".

Mickelson was No. 30 when picked for the 2015 team. This time, he was at No. 15, but there was not a sense that Stricker took him over another player more deserving because no one around Mickelson in the standings had stood out over the last few months. It didn't hurt that the competition will be played just outside of NY, where he is a big fan favorite.

"Personally, I can say he means a lot, " said Stricker, who has played on several Cup teams with Mickelson. I really love being around these guys. "Anirban's experience in South Korea two years ago will be invaluable for him, and the International Team, at Liberty National this year". It will be his 23rd US team, 12th for the Presidents Cup.

This is the first time since 2007 that every player on the worldwide team has a full PGA Tour card.

Four of the American side are now ranked in the top-10 of the world, those being Dustin Johnson (1), Jordan Spieth (2) Justin Thomas (4) and Rickie Fowler (10), whilst the remaining six automatic qualifiers, who are Daniel Berger, Brooks Koepka, Kevin Kisner, Patrick Reed, Matt Kuchar and Kevin Chappell, are in the top-30.
