Paterno admitted to hearing an earlier complaint about Sandusky sexual abuse

Joe Paterno said he knew about abuse claims against convicted child abuser Jerry Sandusky prior to former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary's 2001 claim that he witnessed Sandusky assault a boy on campus, according to a CNN report.

"We didn't want to make the case about Joe Paterno".

According to the police report, McQueary, who went to Paterno after witnessing an alleged act of abuse by Sandusky in 2001, was allegedly told by Paterno that it "was the second complaint of this nature he had received" against Sandusky.

A report from Sara Ganim of has cited evidence that bolsters the claim Penn State head coach Joe Paterno "knew years before Jerry Sandusky's arrest that his longtime assistant might be sexually abusing children". Sandusky was convicted in 2012 of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years.

Last year, unsealed court records revealed that one accuser said he told Paterno about locker-room abuse in 1976. McQueary allegedly told Paterno about what he'd seen the day after it occurred.

Paterno was never charged with any crimes in the Sandusky scandal.

The coach testified under oath that the meeting with McQueary was the first he'd heard of it.

But as the source speaking with PennLive Saturday noted, the coach's death in January 2012 - before that email thread came to light - made it impossible to circle back to Paterno on the specifics of his recommendations at that time.

The legendary coach JoePa, as his fans knew him, died in January 2012 at the age of 85, shortly after he was sacked in November 2011 amid revelations that assistant coach Jerry Sandusky had sexually abused close to a dozen boys on the Penn State campus.

Q: Other than the incident that Mike McQueary reported to you, do you know in any way, through rumor, direct knowledge or any other fashion, of any other inappropriate sexual conduct by Jerry Sandusky with young boys? I do not know of it. So I just did what I thought was best. As for Paterno, he passed away in 2012, shortly after being fired from Penn State as a result of his involvement (or lack thereof) in the matter.
