Butts County schools to close Monday, Tuesday

Richland County will open its first emergency shelter for Hurricane Irma evacuees Saturday.

Public schools and district offices in Polk County will remain closed on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Francis Marion University will close on Friday at 12:30 p.m.in advance of Hurricane Irma, allowing students to evacuate prior to anticipated mandatory coastal evacuations on Saturday, according to a press release.

St. Johns County School District told News4Jax it's monitoring the storm, and will provide updates as they become available.

Meanwhile, The Florida Department of Education is coordinating with school districts, public colleges and universities to monitor the storm.

Ware County School System officials are working closely with Emergency Management Agency officials to monitor the status of Hurricane Irma to determine what effect the storm will have on school schedules.

The Charleston location will be closed on Tuesday as well.

University of Florida in Gainesville said it's expecting to know more later on Tuesday, but has not yet gotten back to News4Jax with details.

The Wakulla County School District will be closed through Wednesday, 9/13.

Districts are preparing in the case that their facilities are needed for shelters. The university has made a decision to move UCF's football game against the University of Memphis to 6:30 p.m. Friday.

"This is based on current tracking information from the National Hurricane Center and the Governor's Office", Hall said.
