Florida Deputy and Corrections Officer Killed From Hurricane Irma

A Hardee County Sheriff's Office deputy who had been helping at an evacuation shelter overnight was killed on her way home Sunday morning. Bridges had just left a hurricane shelter where she had been working to get more supplies when the collision occurred, Tampa station WFLA reported.

The 13-year veteran of the Hardee County Sheriff's Office was from Zolfo Springs. There were no other passengers in either vehicle. The Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the crash. Other details had not yet been released. He was headed for duty at the Hardee Correctional Institution.

"I am heartbroken to learn of the loss of these the two individuals", he said in a statement.

"Our law enforcement and correctional officers work every day to keep Floridians safe. It is because of their work we are able to live in a state where people can raise their families safely", Scott said.
