Top Kashmir Militant, Abu Ismail, Is Killed by Indian Forces

Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Abu Ismail, responsible for the Amarnath Yatra attack on 10 July which killed seven pilgrims, has been shot dead in an encounter in a fierce gun battle in Nowgamr on the outskirts of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.

Abu Ismail was the successor of LeT commander Abu Dujana who was killed in August by Indian security forces.

He said besides being mastermind of Amarnath yatra attack, Ismail was involved in many militant attacks on security forces. They described him as a major player in Kashmir's militant scene, a hardened fighter in his mid-20s who was born in Pakistan and had been organizing attacks in India for at least two years.

Lashkar has not only distanced itself from the attack on Amarnath pilgrims but also condemned the attack.

The identity of the second terrorist is being ascertained, a police official said. The other terrorist killed in this encounter was Abu Qasim alias Chotta Qasim.

Two foreign militants, both Pakistani nationals, were killed.

"We killed Abu Qasim, Abu Dujana and now Abu Ismail".

Meanwhile, ANI said that mobile internet services had been blocked in Srinagar following the encounter.

The security forces in J & K have received great success today.

"We are expecting a vacuum in the LeT leadership now, which should give us more opportunities".

The encounter was possible due to the joint collaboration with CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Rashtriya Rifles. Reacting to the attack, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said the attack is a blot on the Kashmiris and Muslims. "It is, therefore, important to kill the militant leadership".

"The excellent coordination on ground between the security agencies has resulted in positive results and led to killing of top militants", he said.
