Ryanair cancels three Scots flights a day after mix-up

Here's what you need to know.

Rory Boland, travel editor of consumer group Which?, said the airline must arrange alternative flights or provide a full refund.

"The airline said on Saturday it would Flights+a+Day+for+the+Next+Six+Weeks" cancel 40-50 flights every day for the next six weeks, after it "messed up" the planning of pilot holidays.

Ryanair responded by releasing a list of cancelled flights until Thursday, September 21.

But it now has a backlog of holidays for pilots and crew members which must be taken before the end of the year in order to switch to a calendar leave year - as required by regulators - from January 2018 onwards.

Flights from Dublin to London Gatwick and Amsterdam, along with flights from Brussels and Manchester to Dublin are among 12 Irish flights cancelled by the under-fire airline today.

And the airline lost 140 pilots to Norwegian Air so far in 2017, according to the Irish Independent.

If your flight has been cancelled, ask for a refund.

So why is Ryanair cancelling its flights?

It is estimated that around 350,000 passengers could be directly affected by cancellations, though many may not realise flights are cancelled until shortly before their departure date.

According to European Union law, the company has an obligation to reroute you to your destination at "the earliest opportunity", however, exactly how long "earliest" means is yet to be tested, so you may not be able to get a flight with another airline and charge Ryanair for the fare.

The airports where one line of flying will be removed for the next six weeks include: Barcelona, Brussels Charleroi, Dublin, Lisbon, Madrid, Milan Bergamo, Porto and Rome Fiumicino.

For example, if you have had to wait an extra day to take the new flight you should be given accommodation, food, drink and access to communications - such as the cost of a couple of telephone calls.

The fast-growing budget Scandinavian carrier told Reuters last week that it was still talking to Ryanair about a potential partnership, if Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers was willing to join it.

Can I claim other costs from Ryanair? "It is outrageous to think you are treating paying customers like this". You may have cover for this with your travel insurance policy.

It said on Friday that the move to cut 2% of all scheduled flights would improve punctuality which had fallen below 80% in the first two weeks of September. "Ryanair is not short of pilots - we were able to fully crew our peak summer schedule". "When we make a mess in Ryanair, we come out with our hands up and we try to explain why we've made the mess".
